Vince McMahon Steroid Scandal Being Turned Into Scripted Series

World Wrestling Entertainment is teaming up with Blumhouse TV to bring one of the more infamous periods of the then-WWF to life, in The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon. Based on the infamous steroid scandal in which the WWE chairman and CEO was accused of allegedly supplying anabolic steroids to WWE talent, an accusation that McMahon was eventually found not guilty of by the jury and was acquitted by unanimous decision.

This project will be the first scripted portrayal of McMahon on television. It will be produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, executive producers Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold, and WWE executive producer and chief of global television distribution Kevin Dunn.

“We have a dramatic, riveting saga–one that’s crazier than fiction–that will appeal to the cross-section of Blumhouse and WWE fans,” McCumber said to Deadline about the series.

1994 was a particularly bad year for the WWE, as beyond the steroid scandal it was also on the verge of bankruptcy. McMahon’s case was also notable for the CEO refusing to accept a plea deal as he pled not guilty, while the prosecution’s main witness was Hulk Hogan, one of the WWE’s biggest stars. At least the trail made for a great feud between Hogan and McMahon that culminated at 2003’s Wrestlemania XIX.

This isn’t the only Vince McMahon project in development, as the WWE is also working with The Ringer’s Bill Simmons to produce a multi-part Netflix docuseries about the legendary WWE boss. Will it be more riveting than that time when Vince McMahon voiced a very buff otter version of himself? That’s up for debate.

As for the rest of the WWE, The Suicide Squad star John Cena is juggling his HBO Peacemaker spin-off with another potential run at championship gold on Smackdown. Summerslam is also around the corner, and this year the annual WWE event will be aired in movie theaters nationwide.
